What we mean by Learning

Illumina Digital has delivered unique solutions for all ages of learners in a variety of contexts (alone, in groups, at school, home or the workplace, mobile and virtual). Our clients include the DCMS, DCSF, LSIS, schools and universities and Teacher's TV.

We build resources that help users become active participants in their learning. Learners improve when they discover, play, create and share in a supportive environment.

CopyK@tz Beware!

'CopyK@tz Beware!' is a fifteen minute animation produced by Illumina Digital for BBC Learning as part of the BBC's contribution to Safer Internet Week (week beginning Feb 8th 2010). Following the fortunes of a teen band, the AlleyK@tz, the animation covers issues of plagiarism, reliability of information online , copyright and illegal file-sharing. Illumina staff worked with writer Andrew Bernhardt and animators Melissa Gates and Dominik Binegger and commissioned original music (including the track 'Pay for What you Play') from Oceanic.

Illumina designed the newly launched BBC College of Journalism website. Working alongside the College of Journalism team at the BBC, Illumina devised the information architecture for the site and created a sophisticated and striking design that would appeal to journalists, institutions and the general public alike. BBC Raw is the BBC's adult education site supporting and helping adult learners develop skills for everyday life. Illumina produced the video content and built the shell to meet all current BBC accessibility guidelines. Raw Numbers follows on from our work on the Raw Home page with Phil Tuffnell, creating a welcoming environment for users who may be new to the internet and to learning. Go to website

Client: Channel 4 / Objective

We've been working with Channel 4, Derren Brown and Objective to release 7 hoax videos which appear to show paranormal phenomena. In fact they're all based on real scientific principles and there's nothing paranormal about them at all. Over the past few months this hoax footage has been posted all over the internet in an attempt to find out if people would accept the footage as genuine or question it to try to discover the real truth. This Teachers TV led project, launched during Science Week, is a ground-breaking mass-participation psychology experiment. 'Ready To Learn' provided a huge amount of useful data about children's behaviour before school and its effect on their mental alertness during school hours. Whether they get a lift to school or walk, eat cereal for breakfast and go to bed early was all logged during this mass experiment. The participants were then tested on their working memory, cognitive inhibition and planning respectively.Go to website

Primarily for teachers and students but available to the general public too, Illumina Digital's The National Archives Editors Room allows visitors to browse through and edit together video clips, audio clips and stills images taken from The National Archives' fantastic collection. Using our unique eSeq application, users can pan across still images and bring them to life and use a flexible caption feature so they can manipulate titles and captions in the same way. The SuccessPlanner is a web-based application that allows teachers and students to set goals, define tasks and track progress., wherever the user is. Another tool from LSIS' Teaching and Learning Programme, the SuccessPlanner has been designed to allow users to either work individually or collaborate by allocating tasks to team members. Teachers can bring language classes to life with the aid of a soap-opera themed interactive resource known as Cliffhanger Studios. Prompted by engaging video clips, students can take on the role of fictional characters and practice their French, German, Italian, Spanish and Polish. Designed for teachers to use with post-GCSE students, this interactive resource creates a virtual world where students add the text and audio, and act out dramatic scenes from the soap opera. Diploma Support Service

Client: Quality Improvement Agency / Learning and Skills Improvement Service

Multimedia resources for the first and second phases of the 14-19 Diploma Support Programme to help teachers deliver the new Diploma. The resources ranged from booklets aimed at employers and teachers, to CDs, online CPD resources and video case studies. The second phase of the project involved new resources to take account of developments during the first year of Diploma delivery.

Resources were delivered in the following subjects: Construction and the Built Environment, Creative and Media, Engineering, IT and Society, Health and Development, plus a separate resource providing generic guidance for all practitioners. Go to website

QIA

ICT Dictionary

Client: Quality Improvement Agency

The Quality Improvement Agency's ICT dictionary website is aimed at deaf students, their Communication Support Workers and interpreters, and anyone else interested in learning signs for ICT terms. Deaf professionals and BSL specialists worked together to translate terminology used in ICT. The signs were found by interviewing individuals or groups of deaf professionals and evaluated to check their cultural and linguistic appropriateness. The website contains around 1,500 definitions of ICT terms. Go to website

Teaching and Learning Programme

Illumina Digital has successfully delivered resources for more than six years for the Teaching and Learning Programme in all media formats from workbooks, board, card games and online games, to e-learning objects, CPD tools and integrated video case studies illustrating good practice across a variety of subjects.

For the DfES Success for All in Phases 2 and 3, Illumina Digital worked with expert consultants to develop multimedia resources for CPD for Business Studies, Modern Foreign Languages, Land-based learning, and ICT.

For Phase 4, Illumina Digital, in partnership with BDP Learning and Software Logistics, developed and delivered resources aligned to the first five of the new 14-19 Diplomas for the National Teaching and Learning Change Programme for the QIA.

For Phase 5, we worked as part of a consortium lead by Nord Anglia to deliver resources for teachers and learners in Customer care, CPD and MFL.

During Phase 6, Illumina is working with expert consultants to develop a unique Media Content Packager Tool, further updates to the current CPD resources and a reversioned Cliffhanger Studios resources for ESOL learners. Go to website
